SATURNIA AND SACMI: A PARTNERSHIP SHAPING THE FUTURE OF ITALIAN TABLEWARE

From isostatic pressing to digital decoration, continuous innovation is making the company a model of porcelain manufacturing efficiency, quality and sustainability.

For more than fifty years Porcellane Saturnia - located in the heart of Italy’s Civita Castellana ceramic-making district - has been one of Europe’s leading professional tableware makers, all thanks to a clear strategy: continuous investment in best available technologies and selection of partners who can build long-term growth. One such partner, SACMI, is Saturnia's main strategic ally: together, they’ve implemented decades of innovation and built a shared vision of the future of Italian tableware.

From the first isostatic presses, introduced in the 1990s, to innovative lines for the production of complex articles and the revolution in digital decoration – in which Saturnia led the way on the Italian market – each new solution implemented at the Corchiano plant has been a milestone in terms of flexibility, quality and productivity.
Saturnia's constant attention to the technical characteristics and aesthetics of its products constitutes a clear industrial strategy. This has resulted in the gradual evolution of tableware forming, decoration and firing technologies, with a sharp focus on factory efficiency and better working conditions.

Isostatic pressing, the ‘green’ revolution

With a total of 12 isostatic presses now installed – from the first single and double-head LPP models to the latest-generation PHO 451 – Saturnia has continued to invest in SAMA-SACMI technology on account of the outstanding quality and flexibility it delivers in the manufacture of all product types, most notably in the ultra-efficient production of complex items with irregular or non-round shapes.
A turning point came in 2017 when Saturnia was one of the first companies to go for the new SAMA ‘green series’ isostatic press models. Compared to the previous generation of machines, these reduced consumption by more than 30%, reduced cooling water requirements and boosted performance in the ‘special shapes’ segment (round, oval, rectangular or square items up to 400 mm in diameter).

Isostatic pressing, the ‘green’ revolution

All the latest solutions to be supplied (the most recent investment, in 2025, was an additional SAMA PHO451 ‘GREEN’) are equipped with the most versatile machine in the SAMA finishing range, the OFM-8-38 universal finisher: this is designed to dry-finish all article types - round or multi-angular, square or rectangular, plate or dish - including items with irregular or asymmetrical edges. One of the key features of the OFM is its simple product changeover, enabled by an automated contour detection system that requires no action by workers.

Pioneers of digital decoration

SACMI and Saturnia are on a joint mission to explore new technological and market opportunities through innovation. Hence, in 2017, Saturnia’s installation of SACMI's first DHD digital printer, thus introducing in-line digital decoration. Featuring up to 8 color bars and automatic article alignment, this system - already well established in the tiles sector - applies customized decoration directly on the unfired glaze. At Saturnia, this is how large plates (e.g. pizza plates) are now decorated.

This is the first time such technology has been applied to the tableware sector. It replaces decals and third firing, saving both time and money; simultaneously, it enables just-in-time decoration, heightens creativity and helps customers develop their brand image as desired thanks to the vast scope for customization. Digital decoration is a key element of Saturnia's business model, as it allows decorated samples to be prepared quickly and, therefore, personalized products to be offered to customers with a shorter lead time.

A clean factory

SACMI Forni roller kilns for glazed articles have been in operation at Saturnia since the early 2000s as part of the company’s strategy of raising output capacity at every stage and, therefore, enhancing its market penetration capabilities.
One of the most recent challenges – in part triggered by a tightening of industry regulations – involved the installation of a latest-generation air filtration system to eliminate dust inside the factory. At its heart lies a modern 20,000 m³/h bag filter to extract dust from the ten SAMA presses and four spray-dried powder silos. Installed in 2025, this new system, which fully replaces the previous one, drastically reduces dust levels in the department and at the chimney, ensuring a healthier workplace that complies with EU limits on crystalline silica.

Quality, efficiency and sustainability: the future of Italian tableware

The technological developments of recent years highlight the soundness of Saturnia's strategy of concentrating on product quality, process efficiency and social-environmental responsibility.
The way forward is already clear: enhanced digitalization, further investment in green technologies, expansion of output capacity and an ever-sharper focus on customization and reducing the time-to-market. Achieving these goals will give Saturnia the capacity to respond proactively to new needs in the Ho.Re.Ca sector while maintaining the excellent aesthetic-functional standards that are the hallmarks of Italian-made porcelain.
In this scenario, the industrial partnership with SACMI is a crucial enabler as it converts strategy and vision into tangible solutions, continuing to shape the future of Italian and European tableware.
